The first settlement in what became Alexandria, Virginia, was made in 1695. The city, originally named Belhaven, was named after John Alexander, who purchased the land in the late 1600s. Alexandria was officially incorporated in 1779. Parts of Alexandria were at one time ceded to the national government to form the District of Columbia.
