The royal charter for the colony of Maryland was granted in 1632. The colony was named after Henrietta Maria, the Queen Consort of Charles I. A number of Puritans migrated to Maryland following Virginia made Anglicism mandatory. These Puritans were given a parcel of land to settle called "Providence" (modern Annapolis, named for Queen Anne).

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Maryland saw a lot of religious upheaval. The Tolerance Act of 1649 officially tolerated all forms of Christian worship. In 1650, however, the Puritans rebelled against this and set up a government that outlawed both Catholicism and Anglicism. Later the Toleration Act was reinstated, until 1688 when the Protestant faith was firmly established in England. The outlawing of Catholicism caused many wealthy plantation owners to build secret chapels to continue their faith in private. The legal practice of the Catholic faith was not reestablished until after the American Revolution.
