Perhaps the first resident in what became Vienna was Colonel Charles Broadwater, a prominent colonial soldier and public servant. He settled in the area in 1754. Col. Broadwater's daughter married a man by the name of John Hunter, from Ayr County in Scotland. Hunter succeeded Broadwater as the principal landowner in the area. The town became known as Ayr Hill, named after Hunter's home. Vienna retained this name for a hundred years. In the late 1850s, a doctor by the name of William Hendrick agreed to move to Ayr Hill only if the name were changed to Vienna, his home in upstate New York.

Vienna became a real town in 1858, after the coming of the railroad. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederate armies alternately used Vienna as a camping ground. One of the earliest battles of the war, the First Battle of Manassas, took place in Vienna.
